Biography

Mr. Alvaro Castro served as a Partner at KPMG Abogados. He has worked with the KPMG International member firm in Costa Rica for 12 years and is currently a partner in the Tax practice. During his time with the firm, he has provided tax advice to FORTUNE 500 companies, local and regional companies on income tax, VAT, tax incentives, real estate taxation, international corporate tax and value chain management. Alvaro has experience coordinating tax services in Central America and the Caribbean. Alvaro has extensive experience providing tax advisory and restructuring services in the following industries: hospitality, airports, retail, fast food, power generating plants, telecommunication and entertainment, insurance, pharmaceutical, and industry. Before joining KPMG, he was employed as an attorney for the Tax Administration in 1993. In 1994, he was appointed as tax advisor to the finance minister. From 1996 to 2002, he was appointed as director-general of finance. In 1998, he served as vice minister of revenue. He was in charge of the technical secretariat of the commission appointed in 1997 by the finance minister to analyze the Costa Rican tax structure. Alvaro has given lectures and seminars in Costa Rica to regional and multinational companies on tax reform, developments in decisions handed down by the Tax Administration, and the taxation of individuals. He has also participated in seminars in the United States on tax-efficient supply chain business structures. Alvaro is author of several articles for Tax Notes International on Costa Rican tax reform, and jurisprudence as well as several country annual tax overviews. Alvaro is a member of the Costa Rican Bar Association. He holds a Licentiate in Law, from the Universidad de Costa Rica, Law School. He also holds a Master in Information Technology Management, from Universidad Nacional (Costa Rica) and a Master in Public Administration and Mason Fellow, from the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University. He also attended executive level trainings including "Tax and Tax Administration Workshop," at the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University, and an "Intensive Tax Course on International Taxation" at the Universidad Austral de Buenos Aires, Argentina.
