Leo Furcht MD General Information

Biography

Dr. Leo Furcht served as a Professor and Head, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Regents of the University of Minnesota. He served as a Board Member at Animal Cell Therapies. For a three year period in the 90's, he served as Vice Provost for Research of the University of Minnesota Health Sciences and established a research services organization to provide turnkey solutions for faculty and companies to facilitate clinical trials. He served as the President of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), a biomedical research advocacy organization with over 80,000 members and 21 constituent societies from 2006-2007. Prior to this, he served as Vice President for Science Policy and led a FASEB program on conflict of interest in biomedical research. Dr. Furcht was also founding director of the Biomedical Engineering Center of the University of Minnesota. The early efforts of this program focused on biomedical MEMS, stem cells and molecular diagnostics. He was also founding director and PI on the university of Minnesota's M.D./Ph.D. program and MSTP training grant. He also played the lead role in establishing a highly regarded Immunology Center at the University of Minnesota. He is from New York, completed his undergraduate and pre-med at Columbia, received his MD at SUNY Upstate and did residency training at Minnesota where he has been on the faculty since. He has published over 175 scientific papers. He has over 30 patents and founded a number of companies.
