Biography

Ms. Joan Axford serves as Chairwoman at BC Teachers' Pension Plan. Prior to her retirement in 2011, she was the secretary-treasurer with the Saanich School District. Currently Joan does consulting work in public education and is a director on the board of Beacon Community Services. Joan has worked in public education for 29 years, previously serving as comptroller with the Sooke School District, and as director of school finance in the Ministry of Education. Joan was awarded an honorary life membership in the BC Teachers' Federation for her work in public education and in support of teachers' pensions. Joan is also a past president of the Association of School Business Officials and the past recipient of the Larry Ozero Leadership Award, which recognizes leadership in business administration of public education. Joan served on the Pension Advisory Committee from 1994 to joint trusteeship. She is a certified management accountant and in 2012 was awarded the Fellow of the Society of Management Accountants of Canada for her work in management accounting.
