Biography

Mr. Brandon Hurlbut is a Co-Founder & serves as Partner at Boundary Stone Partners. He is a leader in climate policy, finance, technology, advocacy, law, politics, and media. He served as a Board Member at Swell. He served in the Obama Administration as the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Chief of Staff and in the White House as the President's liaison to the energy and environment cabinet agencies. He provided leadership and counsel to the White House and Cabinet Secretaries during high-profile initiatives and challenges including the deployment of $90 billion in clean energy investments under the Obama Recovery Act, the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan, the Gulf oil spill, and Hurricane Sandy. At the DOE, he served on the investment committee for the department's $38 billion clean energy fund. He is a co-founder of Overture VC, a climate tech seed investment fund, and an Operating Partner at NGP Energy Technology Partners, an energy transition growth equity fund. In addition, he is a Senior Advisor to Aligned Climate Capital, an investor in sustainability infrastructure, and serves on the Evergreen Action Advisory Board. He serves as an Operating Partner at NGP. He is an Operating Partner of the NGP energy transition funds, and he brings over two decades of experience working in the policy, finance, technology, advocacy, law, politics, and media areas of climate change. He joined the firm in 2020. He previously served in the Obama Administration as the U.S. Department of Energy Chief of Staff and in the White House as the President's liaison to the energy and environment cabinet agencies. At the DOE, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of a federal agency with a $29 billion budget and a 115,000-person workforce. He served on the investment committee for its $38 billion clean energy fund. After public service, he co-founded Boundary Stone Partners, a climate government affairs firm, and Overture, a climate seed fund. He currently serves on the board of directors of the following organizations: Sparkfund, an energy infrastructure finance platform; Swell Energy, a residential battery storage developer; Orka, a solar finance company; the Sunrise Movement, a youth climate advocacy organization; Clean Energy for America, an organization supporting candidates who champion climate change; and Solutions Project, an environmental justice organization. He earned a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 2004 and a B.A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997.
