Impacts to US and European VC valuations in the current climate

We hosted a webinar that covered VC valuations trends across the US and Europe in Q2.

Valuations are an indicator of investors’ risk appetite for the VC strategy as well as the quality of the startups that are in the market raising capital. As such, they affect many areas throughout the venture cycle, from negotiations on investments to investor fund performance.

Given the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic, investors face a uniquely opaque future in the private markets. That’s why getting an aggregate view of the valuations environment—including the latest data—is critical.

Key takeaways include:

  • Many early-stage VCs have been anticipating a drop in pre-money valuations for many red-hot early-stage companies; however, this decline has yet to materialize in the data
  • Late-stage VC valuations see some strength as investors continue to back the most mature startups to protect value
  • Despite an overall slowdown in exits, valuations haven’t seen a sharp decline outside of IPOs
  • The possible beginnings of an inflection point away from founder-friendly deal terms from in Q1 has seemed to subside
