Ford Foundation is an independent non-profit private foundation based in New York City, New York. Established in 1936 by Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford, the Founder of the Ford Motor Company. The foundation focuses on eight issues which are human rights, democratic and accountable government, educational opportunity and scholarship, economic fairness, metropolitan opportunity, sustainable development, freedom of expression and gender, sexuality, and reproductive justice. The foundation is governed by a fifteen-member board of trustees that sets policies related to grantmaking, geographic focus, spending, investment, management, governance and professional standards, internal and independent audits, and compensation and performance reviews. The assets of the foundation are managed by the board of trustees.
