The fintech vertical is well-known to be backed by billions of venture capital dollars, and private equity investors seem similarly eager to buy in. According to the PitchBook Platform, PE investors last year closed a decade-high 95 deals involving fintech companies, which utilize technology to improve the financial services market. What’s more, the 2015 deal tally marks a 79% jump from the 53 fintech deals PE firms closed three years earlier.
Within Europe, PE investors closed 39 deals last year, a notable 40% increase from activity in 2013. Interestingly, fintech companies in France have become more popular PE targets recently, capturing 20% of European fintech deals in 2015 compared to just 6.5% the previous year.
PE activity on the sell side of fintech has increased in recent years as well, with 46 exits completed in 2015, almost double the 25 exits completed in 2012.
