PitchBook Universities: Europe’s top schools ranked by startup founders

As Europe has grown as a breeding ground for innovative tech startups, its universities have risen to the challenge of educating tomorrow’s founders.

As Europe has grown as a breeding ground for innovative tech startups, its universities have risen to the challenge of educating tomorrow’s founders.

PitchBook’s annual university rankings compare schools by tallying up the number of alumni entrepreneurs who have raised venture capital in the last decade. The rankings are powered by PitchBook data and are based on an analysis of more than 150,000 VC-backed founders

The European list is below, broken down by undergraduate, graduate and MBA programs, with filters for school size and location. We have also published lists for Global Universities and a Female Founders edition.

Methodology

The 2023 PitchBook University rankings are based on the total number of founders whose companies received a first round of venture funding between Jan. 1, 2013, and Sept. 1, 2023. The analysis is based on PitchBook data for global VC investment as well as the educational information of more than 150,000 founders.

Since companies can have more than one founder, and founders can attend multiple schools, it is possible for the same company or founder to count toward multiple universities.

In the graduate category, founders who have an advanced degree that is not an MBA are counted while those with an MBA are countered towards that MBA category.

Correction: This list had been updated to correct HEC Paris' ranking and founder count, which was undercounted due to a data error. (October 4, 2023)
An earlier version of this list incorrectly contained two references to Trinity College. One of those mentions referred to Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut and has been removed. (October 17, 2023)
