Environmental, social & governance (ESG) issues still are the subject of considerable debate in the private equity industry. Some early adopters already have well-established programs touting the success of their efforts; others have yet to see true value added by their ESG initiatives. Whatever your perspective, taking the pulse of where the industry stands on ESG topics is key. Sponsored by R.R. Donnelley, PitchBook's 2016 Private Equity ESG Survey draws from survey data aggregated over four years to assess dealmakers' attitudes toward ESG matters, as well as the level of concrete action. Given the population of respondents, this latest survey in particular highlights how smaller PE firms are grappling with ESG issues, yielding some intriguing results in comparison to prior years' results, which were skewed toward larger fund managers.
