On the whole, investment trends in the Great Lakes have mirrored those across US, with a significant dip in activity in 2009 followed by years of steady uptick. During the past calendar year, though, the decline in deal flow in the region has outpaced that of the entire country.

We focus on venture capital activity in three U.S. regions: Boston, Los Angeles and the Midwest. Highlights include: Capital invested in Boston-area biotechs reached nearly $3 billion; Three Los Angeles-area companies garnered $1 billion+ valuations, with one exceeding $15 billion; Median pre-money valuations in the Midwest jumped by 35% YoY.
