Overview

Morningstar Institutional Equity Research (MIERs) reports provide you with a vast amount of company and industry-level information, allowing you to expand your investment capabilities. These reports break down company data using Morningstar analysts’ industry expertise on over ninety industry groups and global analysis of around 1,500-1,600 public companies. The reports aim to provide you with recommendations on when to buy, sell, or hold. They also enable you to evaluate the investment potential in public companies, using factors such as sustainable competitive advantages or economic moats. This article provides an overview of the reports available through Morningstar Institutional Equity Research and shows you where to find them on the PitchBook platform.

Report types

Company performance reports
These reports provide company analysis using Morningstar’s investment thesis.

  • Cash Flow Model – Downloaded to Excel, these reports contain models that help you to easily compare data from Morningstar research against your existing models. Each report includes at least five years of earnings forecasts including data on company valuations, ROIC, and Equity Stakes.
  • Company Report – Each report contains a detailed analysis of a company by Morningstar’s investment thesis as well as information on each company’s corporate management/stewardship, scenarios, economic moat, trends, valuation, growth, and profitability.
  • Stock Analyst Note – A summary of the impact of corporate actions on Morningstar’s moat and valuation analysis.
Thematic research reports
The thematic research covers specific public companies and delves into industries, companies, and emerging trends that directly affect those specific companies. They aim to provide a long-term view of investment strategies.

  • Canadian Research Update – Provides a bottom-up perspective on the most important trends and factors influencing equity investments for each of the eleven Morningstar sectors that are listed on Canadian exchanges.
  • ESG Landscape – These visually focused reports analyze the impact of material ESG risk(s) an industry faces and how companies are changing and adapting to these risks.
  • Industry Landscape – Gives an overview of Morningstar’s analysis of a specific industry and the stocks under Morningstar’s coverage.
  • Market Outlook – Showcases fundamental, forward-looking commentary of the eleven sectors covered by Morningstar equity research analysts.
  • Moat Framework – An extensive collection of articles that provides readers with a conceptual explanation of key moat components and drivers in seventy industries.
  • Observer – Deep dives into industries, companies, and/or emerging trends with actionable investment ideas on industries covered by Morningstar. These reports are designed to address and tackle the larger issues that will drive long-term company valuations and assist your valuation process.
  • Sector Updates – Quarterly reports that provide an overview of forward-looking market trends and highlight high-conviction investment ideas occurring across eleven sectors covered by Morningstar’s analysts.   • Select Presentation – Analyst presentations that include deep dives into industries, companies, and/or emerging trends.
  • Stock Picker – Evaluations of the holdings of twenty-six investment managers to identify trends and outliers among their holdings and any meaningful purchases and sales during the period under examination.
  • Stock Pitch – A visually-focused report on an individual company under coverage. These reports provide visual aids on Morningstar’s investment thesis for the company.
  • Weekly Research Highlight – A weekly summary of stock ideas and developments in the companies we cover or names under coverage.
Accessing MIERs reports on PitchBook

You can find MIERs reports in multiple locations.

Profiles

If you are looking for MIERs reports on a specific public company, follow these steps.

  1. Head to their public company profile.
  2. Click on the Equity Research tab from the top ribbon of the company profile. This tab lists all MIERs reports for the company. This tab will also include any third-party research reports relevant to the company.

Note: 3rd-party (Aftermarket Research) is only available to certain authorized users of PitchBook services. If you’re unsure you are eligible for 3rd-party research, talk to your account manager.

Research Center

To access MIERs reports from the Research Center, follow these steps.

  1. Select Research Center from the Research section of the left-hand sidebar.
  2. Then, navigate to the Morningstar Research section and click on View All to access a list of all MIERs reports.

Access Morningstar Institutional Equity Research on the go by using the PitchBook Mobile app. To view MIERs reports in the app, follow these steps.

  1. Click on the Research Reports tab from the homepage.
  2. Then, choose the Morningstar option from the top of the screen.
