Help: Navigating the Research Center
Learn how to use the Research Center and find a list of PitchBook’s core report types. The Research Center is PitchBook’s hub for financial industry analysis.
Enhance your understanding of markets, companies, funds, and more with expert analysis from PitchBook and Morningstar in the Research Center. In the Research Center, you’ll find PitchBook’s private market research, Morningstar’s public sector coverage, and aftermarket research coverage from 3rd-party analysts. Our expert analysts approach coverage from many different angles to inform you about the factors and trends making a difference in the markets. In this article, we’ll show you how to navigate the Research Center and discuss the types of reports we offer.
Not a PitchBook customer?
To reach the Research Center, click Research Center in the Research section of the PitchBook sidebar. When you enter the Research Center, you will find dedicated sections for Private Market Research, Aftermarket Research, Morningstar Research, and Transcripts. These sections display the most recent reports and give you a glimpse of the report types available in each category. Click View all in the top right corner of any section to view a full list of reports or transcripts in that category.
From this list, you can view all research, private market research, equity research, or transcripts. In this view, there are also tools specifically designed to help you find the most relevant reports. These are numbered in the image below.
- Search for reports by phrase or keyword using the search bar.
- To search for reports on specific companies, enter the company name in the Add Companies search bar and select the relevant company from the drop-down menu. You can also type the name of your saved searches or lists into this search bar to find reports on companies included in that search or list.
- Click the filter button next to the search bar to open up the filter categories. Learn about the filter categories available to you in the Research Center in the Filtering for specific reports section of this article.
- Navigate among the tabs along the top ribbon to view all content, a specific type of market reports, or transcripts.
Below the search boxes, you can apply several quick filters to the research list. If you do not see these filters, click the filter icon to the right of the search boxes. These filters allow you to narrow down results to find reports that are most relevant to you.
- Sector – Filter to show reports based on Morningstar sectors. You can find the full list of Morningstar sectors and information on what is included in each sector in our Morningstar Global Equity Classification Structure document.
- Report Type – Filter to show Private Market Research, Equity Research reports, or Transcripts. Learn about the types of reports included in each category in the Report categories section of this article.
- Publisher – Filter to show reports by publisher name.
- Analyst – Filter to show reports by analyst name.
- Date & Number of Pages – Filter to show reports by publication date range or by page range.
- Location – Filter to show reports based on their geographic focus.
Once you have found a report you would like to read, click the report title in the Title column. This will open the article reader. Our article reader feature allows you to read PDF report content directly within the Research Center without needing to download the report.
Within the article reader, you can access the full text of reports, see highlights of report content, and find other features. These features are discussed in the following sections of the article.
AI Insights
The AI Insights tab uses artificial intelligence to analyze transcripts and provide a quick summary of important events, key insights, highlights, lowlights, and extracts from analyst Q&A discussions. Click on the numbered citations within this tab to jump to the applicable page in the transcript.
To access the AI Insights tab, you will need to be on the Transcripts tab and click on a transcript.
If you find the information in the AI Insights tab to be particularly accurate or believe any summary is inaccurate, hover over a statement and use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down icons to give feedback and help us improve the tool.
Keywords
The Keywords tab in the article reader features a search bar that allows you to find keywords within the document. To search, type in your keywords and press Enter. If there is a match, the keywords tab will list the pages where you can find the highlighted word(s). You can click on the highlighted page preview within this tab to be directed to the specific page in the document, eliminating the need to manually search.
Details
The Details tab provides the document’s description, alongside other information such as the publication date, name(s) of the analyst(s), report type, and links to download the document. Some documents may reference specific companies. In such cases, the individual companies will also be listed in this section. Click on any company listed here to visit its profile on the platform.
If you have any questions about a PitchBook Research report, you can contact the PitchBook analyst responsible for the report directly through the Research Center. There are two ways to do this.
- In the Private Market Research tab, click on the email icon next to the analyst’s name in the Analyst column.
- You can also contact an analyst from the document reader.
- Click on the report title to open the article reader view.
- Click on the Details tab to open the details panel.
- Select the Contact Analysts option below the analyst’s name.
When you click on the email icon or the Contact Analysts option, a draft email addressed to the PitchBook analyst team will open in your default email program, using the email you have assigned to this program. The subject line and contents of the email will include the analyst’s name as well as the title of the associated report. You can modify the email to add comments before sending it.

Downloading report data
To download a report, hover over the report name in the Title column. Details about the report will appear. From here, you can download a PDF of the report or the Excel file containing the report’s backup data. You can also download a report by using the links in the Download column of the reports table.
To download a report within the article reader, click on the Details tab and navigate to the downloads section for the link.
Note: Downloading reports from the Research Center does not count towards your download limits.
Use research alerts to stay current on the latest private market and equity research reports. Once set, you’ll receive email notifications whenever new reports that match your chosen criteria and frequency are published.
1. To set up alerts, click on the Alerts button in the top right corner of the Research Center and tap Set Alert from the drop-down.
2. From the pop-up window, you can then customize your alert in the following ways:
Set Research Alert
- Alert Name – Create a name for your alert. This alert name will title the email that you receive containing the report.
- Frequency – Choose the cadence at which you want to receive newly published research reports using the Frequency drop-down. The frequencies are as follows:
- Real-time – Get the report as soon as it is released.
- Daily – Receive a daily round-up of reports that were published the previous day (last 24 hours). Typically, if you are in the United States, research alerts will arrive in the morning, while those in Europe or APAC will receive them in the evening.
- Weekly – Get a round-up of reports published during the previous week, delivered on Mondays.
Criteria
- Company – Type in company name(s) to receive research reports on specific businesses, or select a saved search or list from the drop-down menu to receive reports for the companies included in that search or list.
- Sector – Choose a specific sector of reports you are interested in. Sectors are categorized by Morningstar. All the information on what is included in each sector in our Morningstar Global Equity Classification Structure document.
- Report Type – If you have a specific report type in mind, you can select it from the drop-down. A report type breakdown can be found in the Report categories section of this article.
- Publisher – Choose a specific publisher between PitchBook, Morningstar, and our 3rd-party Aftermarket Research providers.
Note: If you have criteria applied in the Research Center such as report type, this will auto-populated in the alert pop-up window.
Tapping Manage Alerts from the Alerts button will take you to the Alerts & Subscriptions section of the PitchBook Platform. Find more information, including disabling alerts and creating alerts for other PitchBook tools in the How to create and edit alerts and subscriptions article.
Our integration of 3rd-party research into the Research Center gives you access to PitchBook and Morningstar’s research alongside 3rd-party aftermarket research from the following contributors.

- Piper Sandler
- William Blair
With the additional research content from these contributors, you can explore various industries and sectors, analyze company performances, and gain valuable insights into key players within the industry. These insights will help you make well-informed investment decisions and assist you in your analysis and valuation workflows. All this content is available for you to search and read within the Research Center, saving you time and effort.

Opt-in for 3rd-party research in the Research Center
To enable 3rd-party research content in the Research Center, click Activate Aftermarket Research below the search bar.
Note: 3rd-party (Aftermarket Research) is only available to certain authorized users of PitchBook services. If you’re unsure if you are eligible for 3rd party research, talk to your account manager.
Opt-in for 3rd-party research in public company profiles
Activating 3rd-party (Aftermarket Research) on a public company profile will give you access to Morningstar Equity Research and 3rd-party research reports related to the company. There are multiple ways to enable 3rd-party research content on a public company profile. First, you’ll need to navigate to the Equity Research tab. Once there, you can enable 3rd-party research by:
- Selecting Activate Aftermarket Research in the top right corner.
- Clicking on the blue Activate button on the right corner of the Introducing Aftermarket Research tile.
- Clicking on a 3rd-party report from the Title column to prompt the opt-in pop-up window.
As you navigate the Research Center, you will encounter different types of reports within each research tab. The reports you see are all part of wider categories. Below, we have outlined the core report categories that make up the reports within each research tab.
Click on the + icon next to the report category to access the full list of reports.
- Analyst Note – Ad hoc notes from PitchBook Analysts that take many forms and highlight new ways to use PitchBook data, discuss new financial regulations, or deep dive into an industry or financial landscape.
- Benchmarks – Leveraging a differentiated data collection process, PitchBook Benchmarks can provide unprecedented transparency into the underlying funds and performance metrics used to construct each of the benchmarks we publish. This enhanced level of granularity helps limited partners (LPs) make more informed asset allocation decisions, while general partners (GPs) can leverage our benchmarks to gauge and report the relative performance of their past and active funds.
- Collaboration – Collaborative reports between Morningstar and PitchBook analysts. These collaborations focus on a variety of topics, including upcoming industries across the public and private markets.
- Data Pack – Collections of Excel files that provide more detailed metrics and details to support published reports.
- Emerging Technology Research – Deep dive reports into specific verticals providing comprehensive segmentation of the spaces, market maps, business model descriptions, industry drivers, and more.
- Market Map – Market maps detailing key subsectors within a space as well as relevant datasets on select companies excelling in the space.
- Market Update – Often called Industry reports, Asset Class reports, PitchBook Core reports, and many other names, these reports provide overviews and identify key factors affecting various subsets of the private market.
- Canadian Research Update – Monthly report that provides a bottom-up perspective on the most important trends and factors influencing equity investments for each of the 11 Morningstar sectors that are listed on Canadian exchanges.
- Cash Flow Model – Morningstar’s interactive discounted cash flow (DCF) models allow you to easily compare data from our research against your existing models. Each downloadable three-stage DCF model includes more than five years of explicit earnings forecasts.
- Company Report – Each report contains institutional research with a detailed analysis of our investment thesis as well as information on each company’s corporate management/stewardship, scenarios, economic moat, trends, valuation, growth, and profitability.
- ESG Landscape – Discusses critical environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risk(s) for a specific industry “cluster.” These visually focused reports analyze the impact of material ESG risk(s) faced by an industry and how companies are changing and adapting to these risks.
- Industry Landscape – A visually-focused report that serves as a primer on an industry. These reports provide an overview of our analysis of a specific industry and the stocks under coverage.
- Market Outlook – Showcases fundamental, forward-looking commentary of 11 sectors covered by equity research analysts: Basic Materials, Communication Services, Consumer Cyclical, Consumer Defensive, Energy, Financial Services, Healthcare, Industrials, Real Estate, Technology, and Energy & Utilities.
- Moat Framework – An extensive collection of articles that provides readers with a conceptual explanation of key moat components and drivers in 70 industries.
- Observer – Deep dive into industries, companies, and/or emerging trends with actionable investment ideas on industries covered. These reports are designed to address and tackle the larger issues that will drive long-term company valuations and assist clients in their own valuation process.
- Sector Report – Quarterly reports with a forward-looking focus albeit rearview mirror glance that provide a succinct overview of notable market trends and accentuate high conviction investment ideas occurring across 11 sectors covered by Morningstar’s analysts.
- Select Presentation – Analyst presentations include deep dives into industries, companies, and/or emerging trends.
- Stock Analyst Note – A summary of the impact of corporate actions on our moat and valuation analysis.
- Stock Picker – Authors evaluate the holdings of 26 investment managers to identify trends and outliers among their holdings as well as any meaningful purchases and sales that took place during the period under examination.
- Stock Pitch – A visually-focused report on an individual company under coverage. These reports provide visual aids on our investment thesis for the company.
- Weekly Research Highlights – A weekly summary of stock ideas and developments in the companies we cover (or names under coverage).

- Earnings Call Transcripts
- Corporate Call Transcripts
- Annual General Meeting Call Transcripts
