Private equity pros have been racking up airline miles the last few years as the number of cross-border deals between the U.S. and Europe have topped pre-crisis totals to hit new record levels. While PE activity in the U.S. has slowed recently, PitchBook’s data shows that the number of deals completed by U.S. PE firms in Europe has increased quite significantly for two straight years, jumping from 289 in 2012 to 477 in 2014. So too has the amount of capital invested, rising from $71.9 billion in 2012 to $113.9 billion in 2014. On the flip side, European investment in the U.S. has remained strong, hitting a record high yearly total of 204 completed deals in 2014, while maintaining an annual capital invested total of between $35 billion and $41 billion during the four-year stretch from 2011 to 2014.
