Adobe Systems, the maker of digital media tools including popular graphics editing platform Photoshop, has agreed to acquire Vista Equity Partners portfolio company Marketo in a $4.75 billion exit for the private equity firm. The deal makes good on rumors of Adobe's interest that emerged late last week. But, then again, rumored interest in Marketo is nothing new.
As SEC documents filed following Vista's $1.8 billion acquisition announcement show, Marketo executives and representatives from Morgan Stanley engaged a number of suitors in M&A talks up to a week before striking the take-private buyout agreement with Vista in May 2016.
Founded in 2006, Marketo has gone from VC-backed email marketing startup to PE-backed marketing analytics powerhouse in 12 short years, with a stint on the public markets in between for good measure.
